Description of the job
Working at the Department of Transport and Planning is different; it’s a place where your technical expertise helps shape the future of Victoria’s transport infrastructure. We manage and maintain critical assets—ensuring safer, smarter, and more resilient networks that keep communities connected and cities moving.
About the role
Shape the future of Victoria’s road network. We’re on the lookout for a technically astute, data-driven Senior Asset Engineer to lead the assessment, validation, and lifecycle management of pavement assets across the state. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on asset performance, inspection quality, and strategic maintenance planning. You’ll play a key role in ensuring our pavement infrastructure is safe, sustainable, and aligned with long-term transport goals.
Day-to-day, you will:
Lead and conduct condition assessments of pavement assets, ensuring compliance with Austroads and departmental standards
Manage asset data collection projects, overseeing scope, budget, and quality assurance
Collaborate with internal teams and external contractors to validate asset data and improve inspection outcomes
Provide expert technical advice on pavement design, maintenance strategies, and risk mitigation
Support the development and review of asset management standards and guidelines
Drive innovation in pavement lifecycle planning and performance monitoring
Contribute to emergency response and asset-related incident investigations as required
This role will suit someone with a curious mind and transferrable skills and experiences, including:
A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, with at least 5 years’ experience in pavement asset management
Strong understanding of asset lifecycle principles, inspection protocols, and infrastructure standards
Experience managing technical projects in transport or infrastructure environments
Familiarity with HSE practices and Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)
Ability to interpret complex data and translate it into actionable insights
Proven stakeholder engagement and the ability to influence technical outcomes
Experience with large-scale civil infrastructure or road maintenance programs is highly regarded
If you meet some of these requirements, but not all, we encourage you to submit your application.
With a career at the Department of Transport and Planning, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits, including:
Flexible working arrangements and generous leave entitlements
Professional development and leadership pathways
Wellbeing support, including mental health resources and employee assistance programs
Opportunities to contribute to high-impact infrastructure projects
Inclusive workplace culture and employee-led diversity networks
Community engagement initiatives and volunteering opportunities
We offer a range of flexible working and leave options, so you can balance your work and life commitments and interests. Have a conversation with us about how this could work for you.
We embrace diversity with a foundation of safety, wellbeing and inclusion; where everyone belongs. We treat everyone with fairness, consideration and respect, regardless of gender, gender identity, marital or family status, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, religious beliefs, cultural or socio-economic background, perspective, and experience – whether they work for us or not. We want to ensure everyone feels comfortable and safe to express ideas, questions and concerns.
